Lii Ying Chen — Artist
"Painting is the space between breathing in and breathing out — a moment suspended in ink and water."

Lii Ying Chen is an artist based in the Philadelphia suburbs, specializing in the timeless tradition of Chinese painting. A graduate of National Taiwan University with a degree in Sociology, Lii Ying dedicated the early years of her career to social work at the Taida Children Mental Health Center before immigrating to the United States in 1976.

For over thirty years, Lii Ying has studied under the guidance of renowned local artist Josephine Tsai. Her work is a deep exploration of Chinese philosophical thought, capturing the rhythmic vitality of nature and the essential harmony between Yin and Yang. Through disciplined brushwork and a masterful use of negative space, she seeks to bridge the gap between the universe and the human spirit.

Beyond the canvas, Lii Ying is a steadfast advocate for cultural heritage. She has been a pillar of the MingDe Chinese School community for more than three decades, serving as Principal from 1993 to 1995 and continuing her work today as a member of the school committee. For Lii Ying, painting is more than an artistic pursuit; it is a lifelong dedication to capturing the spirit of her subjects and preserving her rich cultural inheritance.
